A native of Spring, Texas, Josh Beckett began playing Lions Baseball during his freshman year at Spring High School. Even though Josh was already pitching in the high 80s he remained on the Junior Varsity team for the course of that season. During his sophomore year Josh went 9-3 and struck out 149 hitters. During his junior year he went 13-2 with a 0.39 ERA. Voted the Texas 5-A High School Player of the Year, he fanned 178 in 89 innings, allosing just 31 hits and 29 walks. His perfermance helped earn him the nickname "Kid Heat". As a senior, Josh went 10-1 with a 0.46 ERA, with 155 K's in 75.1 innings and was selected by USA Today as the High School Pitcher of the Year. During the 1999 draft, Josh became the second pick in the first round of the Major League Baseball draft. Josh Beckett's baseball jersey number "19" was retired by Lions Baseball in 2004.


KennyHUMPHREYS #20
As one of the most respected coaches in the Houston area, and as Head Baseball Coach of Spring High School for nine years, Coach Humphries led the Lions to untold successes with the Lions ranking #1 in the nation in 1998. Coach Humphreys coaching career spanned 24 years during which time he has led his teams to multiple state playoffs, was named the Greater Houston Coach of the Year on three occassions and District Coach of the Year fourteen times. His dedication to his players has resulted in 72 players receiving baseball scholarships, 15 have been drafted by major leage baseball including 2 first rounders. As an assistant football coach he has had 4 players participate in the NFL and 1 become a NFL coach. Coach Humphreys has also served on the board of various baseball and athletic organizations. In 2006 Coach Humphreys was inducted into the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association "Hall of Fame" along with Roger Clemens. Coach Humphreys now serves the Spring Independent School District as Assistant Athletic Director. His baseball jersey number "20" was retired by Lions Baseball in 2003.


KennyCRAFTON #33
Kenny Crafton graduated from Spring High School in 1980. As a student he was a role model and an outstanding athlete. His athletic ability earned him All District honors in football and All State Honors in baseball. In 1979 Spring High School won the 1979 UIL State Championship in baseball. Kenny pitched a one hitter in that great game over Baytown Sterling. Kenny attended TCU on a baseball scholarship after his graduation from Spring High School. After graduating from college, he went on to begin his coaching career at West Rusk High School. Kenny died unexpectedly in a 1986 auto accident. Those of us who knew him will always remember him as a person with great character and outstanding leadership abilities. In his honor the Spring Independent School District named Spring High School's annual baseball tournament the KENNY CRAFTON MEMORIAL BASEBALL TOURNAMENT. This year marks the 22nd year that tournament has been held. Kenny Crafton's baseball jersey number "33" was retired by Lions Baseball in 1987 and his jersey was placed in the Spring High School trophy case.
